The Segeberg Scoop - October 2006

Here it is, the first day of November, and I’m finally getting to the Scoop. These past few weeks have been busy, so I’m glad to have time to get this sent out!

We’ll start with Kallie’s latest…Nothing too exciting—but she’s just as cute as ever! (Of course, I am a little biased.) In the September Scoop, I mentioned that Kallie had mastered the word “NO!” During October, Kallie started saying “YES!” There have been a few funny moments when she has said “YES!” at the wrong time, but she has a pretty good understanding of what yes and no really mean. It makes our job as parents SO much easier!

During the past week or so, Kallie has also been learning a lot about gravity. It all started when we took a trip to a pumpkin patch and she fell down on some of the play equipment there. She had a red nose for about a week afterward! About a week later, when she was playing with Ryan on our bed, she managed to escape his grasp and fall over the edge. Just 2 days later, she discovered that she still can’t manage going down a flight of stairs on her own. She opened a door at my parents’ house and took a tumble down the basement stairs. The next day, while climbing onto a chair at Nursery, she pushed most of her weight to the wrong side and landed on her head. Thank goodness those chairs are pretty close to the ground. Then, just last night, within five minutes, Kallie ended up falling off a chair then tripping and bumping her head on the table leg. Amazingly enough, she has acquired only a few minor bumps and bruises as a result of these gravity experiences.

Yesterday was the first time that Kallie got to enjoy Halloween. She was dressed up as a little pink fish this year! In the morning, we went to a “playgroup” party with other kids from our ward. Kallie enjoyed eating cookies and running around with the other kids. Then, yesterday afternoon, Ryan’s employer hosted a “Trick-or-Treat” at their offices. It didn’t take Kallie long to become very efficient at grabbing a piece of candy, putting it in her little bag, and moving on to the next bowl of treats. She also became quite efficient at Trick-or-Treating last night. She quickly learned to say “Tick-o-Teet”, take a piece of candy, and then say “Bye!” and move to the next house. She was thrilled with all of the chocolate treats she was given. The whole experience was quite fun for all of us! Thank goodness she doesn’t remember about the candy today. :)

Ryan is still plugging away at school—like usual. The GRE scores showed up a few weeks ago and he has started receiving offers from many schools around the country. We’re not sure how his scores compare with others, but several schools have already requested that he apply to their program. Our current plan is to stay at BYU for Ryan’s graduate work, but it is certainly tempting to think about heading somewhere else! Ryan is, also as usual, doing really well in his classes. He is at least a week ahead of schedule in one class and is accomplishing the work in his other class ahead of time as well. Work is also going very well for Ryan. He is enjoying what he does and has been told that people outside of his team are noticing his work.

My exciting news for the month is baby-focused, of course. It’s hard to think about much else when you’re pregnant! About 2 weeks ago, I got to have another ultrasound. That day just happened to be my birthday—and the ultrasound tech made sure that it was a good day! I was supposed have just a placenta check, because the placenta was low-lying at the 20 week ultrasound. But, the tech looked at our little one, took a few measurements, and finished up by doing a 3D ultrasound picture at the end! Our little girl weighed about 3 1/2 lbs., which put her close to the 50th percentile for her size. If she continues to grow at an average rate, she will weigh about the same at birth as Kallie did when she was born. The 3D picture was very neat, although we weren’t able to get a good shot of her little face. Just like the 20 week ultrasound, our little bean was sucking her thumb again and had her other arm up by her head, which blocked our view. It was just a very exciting thing for mom! :) Other than that, I’m just plugging away keeping our home clean and Kallie busy. It’s definitely mundane, but my energy is starting to lag, so the everyday routine is quite enough for me for now.

Well—that’s our family fun for the month! We’re looking forward to a great Thanksgiving this next month! Hope to hear from you soon!

Love,

Ryan, Amanda, and Kallie Segeberg
