The Segeberg Scoop - May and June 2006

I’m obviously VERY late for getting the May Scoop out—and I’m just a little early on the June Scoop, but between the two, there should be enough Segeberg news to get you through the end of July! :)

First and foremost, and the biggest reason I missed the May Scoop, is that Kallie is going to have a new sibling in December! I am due on December 30, but if I have Cholestasis again, (90% chance I will), this little one will come near the beginning of the month instead. Just a few days ago, I had an ultrasound and we were able to see our new little bean wiggling and squirming all over the place! It was so fun to see that little developing body! And, it was a sight that helped to make all of the sickness and exhaustion I’ve been experiencing much more worth it.

May was a wonderful month for us—full of new and exciting developments, especially on the Kallie front. The beginning of the month marked Kallie’s one year birthday! It’s hard to believe that she’s already a year old! We had a little family party and Kallie really enjoyed smashing her chocolate Ladybug cake and smearing it all over herself. For the majority of the month, Kallie was threatening to take her first steps. She would even stand herself up in the middle of the floor to play with a toy—but she refused to actually walk. Finally, during the very last weekend in May, while we were in Seattle, she decided that it was time to take the plunge. It was so exciting to see her gather her courage and take those steps. I think my favorite part was seeing the big smile on her face any time she used her new talent. Kallie has also been picking up new signs on a regular basis. She’s surprised me a couple of times by showing me signs that I didn’t realize she even knew. It has been fun watching her learn to communicate more efficiently. Recently, she’s started to let me know when she feels like she has done a good job. Whenever she feels like she has accomplished something wonderful, (i.e. putting a shape in her shape sorter, putting a ring on her stacking toy, etc.), she will clap for herself. It’s cute and gives mom and dad a clue that they should be aware of her great accomplishments.

Ryan has had a very busy month and a half. It’s rare that I get to see him or spend time with him. Even though he has been enjoying his Artificial Intelligence class, I think we will both be very relieved and grateful when Spring Term ends in a few days. Ryan has also been extremely busy at work trying to get his team’s product ready for release. There have been many hours spent at work during the past couple of weeks in preparation for this event. In addition to all of this, Ryan ran the Salt Lake City Marathon during the first weekend in June. He finished in 5 hours 23 minutes—and I am so proud of him for reaching his goal! He worked so hard to train and prepare for this event. He was sore for a few days afterward, but has recovered very well overall. In fact, it was such a good experience that he’s thinking about running the same marathon again next year! Within the past few weeks, Ryan was also called to be Assistant Ward Clerk and will be in charge of the ward finances. He’s so organized that I know his talents will be well used in this calling.

Life for me has been very interesting during the past month. I started out the month feeling rather sick and tired, as early pregnancy is prone to do to a person. By the end of the month, the sickness was a bit more manageable—and then about a week ago, WHAM! I got really sick. Since my sickness also increased at this point in my pregnancy with Kallie, I figured it was all part of the game. After about two days of this, I ended up going to the hospital for what my midwife thought was dehydration. It turned out that I wasn’t dehydrated, but I somehow contracted a yucky stomach virus that’s been going around. Today is the first day that I have felt somewhat like myself again—and I’m very grateful that the extreme sickness was only temporary! Now that I’m feeling better, I’m looking forward to focusing on my new calling as Compassionate Service leader in my ward. There are at least 10 babies due this summer, and I’ll have my hands full coordinating their needs, as well as the constant stream of families moving in and out of the ward. It will keep me busy, but I’m very excited about this new opportunity.

Well, that’s about all for the Segebergs for these two months. We look forward to hearing updates on the things that are happening in your lives! Have a great month!

Love,

Ryan, Amanda, and Kallie
