The Segeberg Scoop - September 2005
I know what you’re all thinking…You’re thinking, “Isn’t it time for another Segeberg Scoop?” You’re right! September is coming quickly to an end so here is what’s happening with the Segebergs. (There’s a lot that happened this month! This is going to be a novel!)
I think September is one of my favorite months, at least in Utah. The leaves are changing, the air is getting cooler, and I know that snow is just around the corner! Plus, there’s that homey, autumn smell in the air—and who doesn’t love that? And—probably the BEST part about September…Football season kicks into gear!
We took Kallie to the first BYU game of the season. What an adventure THAT was. Earlier in the week, the forecasts said it would be cool and partly cloudy. As it got closer to game day, however, the predicted high inched higher and higher. So, it was still partly cloudy—although the clouds didn’t block the sun until the fourth quarter—and definitely much warmer than we would have liked. We hoped that somehow our seats would be in the shade, but we were not so lucky. Trying to nurse a baby under a blanket on a hot day, with people screaming all around, while sitting in the sun isn’t really the best way to accomplish the task. Kallie was an angel through the whole ordeal, but Ryan and I decided to never put ourselves through that again! In the end, we made it work and we managed to keep her sunburn free!
The most major September event in our family happened after BYU lost that game. As we were leaving, we were second in line to pull out of the parking lot. Suddenly, the driver of a Suburban (with an Arizona license plate!) in front of us decided that she didn’t want to leave the parking lot anymore so she decided to back up and turn around. (We were the only car behind her—but didn’t know that at the time.) As soon as Ryan saw the reverse lights go on, he started honking like crazy. But, the 20 year old girl, on her cell phone, with her car piled FULL of suitcases and friends, decided that whoever was honking surely wasn’t honking at her—and she proceeded to drive her trailer hitch straight into our little car. OK—as if our experience at the game and then losing the game were not enough in one day!
The hood was crumpled up pretty well and the grill was smashed in on the driver’s side. We wanted take a look to see what the damage was, but couldn’t open the hood! We ended up driving the car home, but decided not to drive it after that because it was making some STRANGE noises. Turns out that the radiator was punctured, a couple of fans at the front were smashed…and we got a new bumper, hood, and headlight. Except for the complete lack of help from her Insurance company’s customer service, everything went pretty smoothly in getting it all fixed. We had a rental car for a week and a half…and now have our beautiful little car back. What an adventure that was!
In other news…Kallie is growing like a little weed! At her 4 month appointment, she was in the 25th Percentile, so she’s right on track growth-wise. At the beginning of the month, she decided that sleeping just wasn’t her thing and that 10 minute naps were just fine. Those short naps, however, were not just fine with mom. As a matter of trial and error, I figured out that she was hungry and what she was getting just wasn’t enough anymore. I started her on cereal and after a few days, she was back to her happy little self. We were also thrilled to hear her laugh for the first time this month! It’s not a regular occurrence, but when conditions are just right, we can still get a giggle or two out of her.
Ryan’s been super busy with school since Day 1. If he’s not at school or at work, he’s usually at his computer doing homework. This is the most work intensive semester he’s had since we were married. Spending time with him consists of sitting at my computer playing games while he does homework. But, this too shall pass! I forgot to mention in the August Scoop that Ryan ran a half-marathon! He did very well and is thinking about running the SLC marathon in April. Hopefully, the academic load won’t be as heavy next semester and he’ll be able to accomplish that goal!
I have been enjoying being a stay-at-home mom, especially now that Kallie is in a routine. It makes my day so much more predictable! A couple of weeks ago, I was released as the Education Counselor in the Relief Society and called to be the “Ward Newsletter and Printed Order of Service Specialist.” Although it makes my Sunday mornings a little more hectic, it’s been fun to work on putting everything together. I enjoy my calling, as I am able to be creative and serve at the same time. I have also started attending our Stake’s Institute this semester. Ryan stays home with Kallie while I get a night off! I feel it’s a great way to spend an evening out…I’m able to just sit and listen without having to worry about my baby.
This weekend, Ryan and I are looking forward to Conference and mission reunions! Hopefully, we’ll see some of you who are reading this e-mail! My Australian Mission President is going to be in town, and I’m excited to introduce them to Ryan and Kallie. It’ll be a fun weekend!
I love hearing from everyone! Please write when you get a chance!
Love,
Amanda, Ryan, and Kallie
